The next episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will see the return of Brian Patrick Wade’s Absorbing Man, a key villain from the comic books who was first introduced on the show in season 2. The character hasn’t been seen since he last appeared in an episode of season 3.
Carl “Crusher” Creel debuted in Journey into Mystery #114 in 1965 as a villain of Thor. Creel was a convict who Loki sought to use as a weapon against his brother. After granting Creel the ability to absorb the properties of anything he touched, Creel took on the name “The Absorbing Man”. Creel became known for his trademark ball and chain and low intelligence. After a number of clashes with the God of Thunder, Absorbing Man became a recurring foe for other Marvel characters such as the Hulk, the Avengers, and Spider-Man.
ABC has released a synopsis for the next episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., titled “All the Comforts of Home”, which will air after the show returns from its hiatus. In the last episode, Coulson and his team activated the portal and went back to their correct place in the timestream. The synopsis reveals that they will attempt to “rewrite the course of humanity’s fate” now that they’re finally back. However, their actions will “dramatically change” the life of one of the main characters. According to the list of guest stars for the episode, fans will get to witness the return of the Absorbing Man:
“All the Comforts of Home” – Coulson and team set out to rewrite the course of humanity’s fate, but they’re unaware that their efforts will dramatically change one S.H.I.E.L.D agent’s life, on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” FRIDAY, MARCH 2 (9:01-10:01 p.m. EST), on The ABC Television Network, streaming and on demand.
“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie and Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez.
Guest starring are Jeff Ward as Deke, Catherine Dent as General Hale, Dove Cameron as Ruby, Brian Patrick Wade as Carl Creel, Briana Venskus as Agent Piper, Shontae Saldana as Candice Lee, Antonio Aaron as Officer Kennedy, Stewart Skelton as Chief Wellins, Patrick Warburton as General Stoner, Joel David Moore as Noah, Josh Fingerhut as bartender and Amy Tolsky as woman.
”All the Comforts of Home” was written by Drew Z. Greenberg and directed by Kate Woods.
Coulson and his team battled Absorbing Man in his debut appearance in the season 2 premiere, “Shadows” when he was working for HYDRA. Fitz and Simmons had to use science to combat Absorbing Man’s unique abilities. He later returned as the personal bodyguard to General Talbot (Adrian Pasdar) in season 3. He had apparently been cured of HYDRA’s brainwashing, but was distrusted by the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., particularly Lance Hunter (Nick Blood). He managed to gain their trust after rescuing Coulson and Talbot. The character was also mentioned in the first season of Daredevil.
It’s unclear what the circumstances will be for Absorbing Man’s return. Talbot was left in critical condition in season 4 and is not listed as a guest star for the next episode, which suggests that Creel will have taken on a new job. It could be that he now works for General Hale (Catherine Dent), the woman tasked with arresting Coulson’s team. Her daughter, Ruby (Cameron Dove), will be introduced in the same episode.
The guest star list for “All the Comforts of Home” reveals that Jeff Ward’s Deke will also make an appearance, though his survival was left in question. It remains to be seen if we will get to see more of the “future” characters that have been introduced in season 5.
