Nicolas Cage has some unfinished business to deal with in a clip from his upcoming action-thriller, A Score to Settle. Over the nearly-four decades since Cage started appearing in films, he’s brought his bravado acting style to multiple now-classic comedies, won an Oscar, led a successful run as a ’90s action movie star, and appeared in all manner of low-budget genre fare. Just last year alone, he starred in the cult hit Mandy and voiced both Superman and Spider-Man Noir in the animated Teen Titans Go! movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, respectively.
Never one to take an extended break, Cage will be back next month with his latest offering, A Score to Settle. Referred to as Old Man during production, the movie revolves around Frank (Cage), a career crook who’s released from prison (where he’s spent the last 19 years) after being diagnosed with a fatal medical condition. And while he’s eager for some bloody payback against the members of his old gang for betraying him, he’ll need to pick up some artillery first - as a new clip from the film illustrates.
Screen Rant is exclusively debut a scene from A Score to Settle, ahead of the movie’s release in theaters, On Demand and Digital on Friday, August 2. You can check it out in the space below.
Written by John Newman (Proud Mary) and directed by Shawn Ku (Beautiful Boy, Seeds of Yesterday), A Score to Settle features a supporting cast that includes Benjamin Bratt (Doctor Strange), Noah Le Gros (Wolves), Mohamed Karim (A Facebook Romance), and Karolina Wydra (who’s been co-starring in Agents of SHIELD season 6 of late). For the large part, though, the movie appears to serve as a vehicle for Cage to not only play the badass again, but also serve up the sort of grounded dramatic acting that he’s not necessarily known for, but has long excelled at (see Joe, for a fairly recent example). The film’s plot summary seems to confirms as much by mentioning that Frank’s quest for vengeance is complicated by his newfound relationship with his long-estranged son.
With the heavily-hyped Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw set to hit theaters the same day as A Score to Settle, the latter will be looking to thrive as counter-programming for those who feel like staying in that weekend and catching the latest On-Demand release. Having Cage aboard will surely help to attract a larger audience, especially for those who actually prefer his acting when he buttons things down. Fear not, though: he’s expected to return to his freaking-out style in the foreseeable future, when he stars in the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation Color Out of Space.
A Score to Settle premieres in theaters, On Demand and Digital on Friday, August 2.
